Abstract

Detailed chemical and spectrophotometric modeling of nearby galaxies allows to derive star formation (SF) histories of spiral galaxy disks as a function of Hubble type. Transforming galaxy ages to redshifts for any given cosmology (H o,Ω o,z f) yields — among others — redshift evolutions of chemical abundances and element ratios. Our models explicitly account for SNI contributions to 56Fe, etc. Comparison with curve of growth determined abundances of metal line systems associated with damped Lyα absorbers shows that

  • the weak redshift evolution of abundances of damped Lyα systems is consistent with expectations from the slowly varying star formation rates of galactic disks

  • the abundance scatter of damped Lyα systems at fixed redshift is consistent with the range of star formation histories from Sa through Sd disks.
