The Bottom of the Main Sequence — And Beyond

Part of the book series: ESO Astrophysics Symposia ((ESO))

Abstract

Using optical (BVRI) photometry we have determined photometric parallaxes for components of Luyten and Giclas common proper motion binaries. The resulting luminosity function for main sequence components, corrected for incompleteness to μ ≥ 0.2″/yr and m pg ≤ +18, is compared to those of main sequence field stars and visual binary components.

Based on observations collected as; Visiting Astronomers at Kitt Peak National Observatory & Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy for the National Science Foundation (JAS, TDO); Visiting Astronomers at Lowell Observatory (JAS, TDO); and, Guest Observer, McDonald Observatory, University of Texas at Austin (JAS).
