Sub-arcsecond Imaging of G29–38 using Adaptive Optics

The Bottom of the Main Sequence — And Beyond

Abstract

We present near infrared high angular resolution observations of G29–38 obtained at the ESO 3.6-meter telescope with the COME-ON-PLUS adaptive optics system. G29–38 is a nearby white dwarf exhibiting a mid-IR excess. This excess can possibly be attributed to the presence of a brown dwarf companion orbiting the white dwarf. Adaptive optics in the infrared appears to be the only possible method to detect the suspected low mass companion. At 2.2 µm, the white dwarf and the infrared excess are about equal in terms of magnitude (13.35) and under some reasonable hypotheses, the maximum separation between the two components could be of the order of 0.06”. Although this is half of the diffraction limit of a 3.6-meter telescope at 2.2 µm, super-resolution techniques and differential imaging (in J, H and K bands) should allow its detection. We present the results of the first observations.
