Abstract
The potential of, and the need for, the VLT in studies of the composition and history of stellar populations in the solar neighbourhood is illustrated and discussed. It is concluded that there are certain areas, of great significance for the understanding of stellar and Galactic evolution, where the contribution of the VLT will be of key significance.
