Abstract
A strategy for a SN search in clusters at redshift z = 0.3-1 and for the use of SNIa as distance indicators for cosmological tests is presented. It is stressed that, after peculiar SNIa are identified and excluded, the main uncertainty lies in the absorption correction. In particular we illustrate the problems of the widely applied method of (B - V) color comparison for the estimate of the absorption. A fundamental step is the identification of the physical origin of the observed diversity of SNIa: to this aim the synthetic spectrum fitting technique is the most important tool available. The expected performance of FORS is adequate for our programme; the main requirement for VLT is flexibility of scheduling and operation
