Abstract

The prospects for research of the Interstellar Medium (ISM) in galaxies with the VLT are discussed. The focus is on measuring the physical conditions and structure of the ISM, and on probing the conditions in regions of circumnuclear star formation which are heavily obscured and only well accessible in the infrared region of the spectrum.
