Abstract

It is demonstrated that high resolving power and high signal-to-noise ratio absorption line spectroscopy has led to most of the recent advances in the field of circumstellar, interstellar and intergalactic media. An ultra-high resolution mode would very greatly enhance the scientific return of the VLT in these fields of cosmogonical and cosmological significance.
