Abstract

The Very Large Telescope will allow us to determine more orbital periods and component masses of cataclysmic variables, low-mass X-ray binaries and high-mass X-ray binaries. These are required to put evolutionary models for these systems on a quantitative footing. The masses of neutron stars in low-mass X-ray binaries will set the best limits on the equation of state at high densities. Fundamentally new measurements that become possible with the Very Large Telescope include the detection and low-resolution spectroscopy of nearby single neutron stars, and the structure of the accretion disks in low-mass X-ray binaries. The most useful instruments for this research are a low-resolution infrared spectrograph, and a fast multicolour photometer.
