Abstract

Following pioneering work in the 1960’s and 70’s, many efforts have been made to find the cosmologically and astrophysically significant parameters Y P and dY/dZ as precisely as possible by observing emission lines in extragalactic HII regions. With the accumulation of improved data, several controversial issues have arisen and observational limits on Y P and dY/dZ may have widened somewhat. New, accurate parallaxes from the HIPPARCOS satellite promise to revive interest in estimating Y P and dY/dZ from main-sequence stars with differing metallicities, but even HIPPARCOS parallaxes will be marginal for fitting extreme subdwarfs.
