Bei den Fehlbildungen von Nieren und Harnwegen unterscheidet man Agenesien, Hypoplasien, Doppelanlagen, Lageanomalien und zystische Fehlbildungen. Eine häufige Fehlbildung ist die Doppelanlage der Niere mit unvollständiger Trennung der Nierenbecken, sonographisch als Parenchymbrücke erkennbar. Viele erbliche Nierenerkrankungen manifestieren sich bereits in der frühen Kindheit. Man unterscheidet zystische, glomeruläre und tubuläre Formen sowie Stoffwechselerkrankungen mit Nierenbeteiligung. Mit einer Häufigkeit von 1/400–1000 ist die autosomal dominante polyzystische Nierenerkrankung die häufigste erbliche Nierenerkrankung. Im mittleren bis höheren Lebensalter führt sie zu Hypertonie und Niereninsuffizienz.
