Die hepatische Enzephalopathie (HE) ist eine funktionelle und damit potentiell reversible Störung des Zentralnervensystems als Folge akuter oder chronischer Hepatopathien. Zu unterscheiden ist die HE bei chronischen Lebererkrankungen, bei der unterschiedliche neurologische und psychische Symptome auftreten, von der HE beim selteneren akuten Leberversagen, bei der eine Hirndrucksymptomatik im Vordergrund steht. Die HE ist eine der wichtigsten Komplikationen von Leberkrankheiten. Unter Zirrhosekranken sind 50–70% davon betroffen, wenn man die minimale-Form der HE mit einbezieht.
