Das rheumatische Fieber ist eine in westlichen Ländern heute selten gewordene, entzündliche Systemerkrankung, die als Autoimmunreaktion infolge einer Infektion des oberen Respirationstrakts durch β-hämoly-sierende Streptokokken der Gruppe A auftreten kann. Die Erkrankung betrifft verschiedene Organsysteme: hauptsächlich die Gelenke mit einer migratorischen Polyarthritis und das Herz mit einer Endo-, Myo- und Perikard einschließenden Karditis, seltener das Nervensystem und das Subkutangewebe. Von Bedeutung ist insbesondere die Karditis wegen der als Folge regelhaft auftretenden Herzklappenfehler.
