Das nach dem schwedischen Ophtalmologen Henrik Sjögren (1899–1986) benannte Syndrom (SS) ist eine Autoimmunerkrankung, die durch eine chronische Entzündung exokriner Drüsen, bevorzugt der Tränen-(Conjunctivitis sicca) und der Speicheldrüsen (Xerostomie) gekennzeichnet ist. In einem Drittel der Fälle kommt es zu extraglandulären Manifestationen, insbesondere der Bewegungsapparat ist häufig einbezogen. Da dieses Syndrom auf dem Boden einer anderen Grunderkrankung (rheumatoide Arthritis, SLE, systemische Sklerose u. a.) auftreten kann, wird üblicherweise zwischen einem dann »sekundären SS« und dem primären SS unterschieden.
