The Sertoli Cell-Germ Cell Interactions and the Seminiferous Tubule InterIeukin-1 and lnterIeukin-6 System

The Genetic Basis of Male Infertility

Part of the book series: Results and Problems in Cell Differentiation ((RESULTS,volume 28))

Abstract

The testis consists of convoluted seminiferous tubules embedded in a connective tissue matrix, called the interstitium. The seminiferous tubule, in which spermatozoa are produced, comprises the germ cells, the non-proliferating Sertoli cells and the peritubular cells, which surround the Sertoli and germ cells. The seminiferous epithelium consists of continually dividing germ cells and Sertoli cells, which stop dividing during puberty. The interstitium contains a mixture of blood and lymph vessels, nerves, fibroblast cells, macrophages, lymphocytes, occasionally mast cells, and Leydig cells. The last produce androgens crucial for differentiation of the embryonic male reproductive organs, sexualisation of the hypothalamus and brain, and for the formation and control of accessory sex organs, secondary sexual characteristics and spermatogenesis.
