Abstract

Recently, photothermal and photoacoustic techniques have been applied in a number of experiments (see e.g. [1–8]) as versatile tools for surface studies. In combination with laser excitation, these methods offer advantages such as high sensitivity, high spectral and high temporal resolution. This makes it possible to investigate adsorbate-substrate as well as adsorbate-adsorbate interactions for coverages as low as a few thousandths of a molecular monolayer [9]. In addition, photothermal laser spectroscopy has been used e.g. to study phase transitions at interfaces [10] or to investigate laser-induced desorption phenomena [11]. Experiments were performed with continuous-wave as well as pulsed lasers and in combination with contact and non-contact surface probing.
