Abstract
A light beam propagating freely in air and the fundamental mode guided by a single-mode fiber are electromagnetic waves, i.e. electric and magnetic fields which vary in time and depend on the location of the point of observation. In order to understand single-mode fibers, it is necessary to know how to describe these electromagnetic fields.
