Abstract
The measurement of the relevant fiber parameters is necessary during the manufacturing process, for system design, and for specification purposes. Since single-mode fiber technology is still advancing rapidly, it is difficult for researchers, manufacturers, and users to reach a consensus about the best way to measure a given parameter, even if the parameter is well defined. Since the recommendation of a few significant parameters, standard values, and simple and accurate measuring methods has technical and economical implications, standards committees like the CCITT are presently discussing how to define the quantities, how to measure them, and how to fix standard values for them.
