Abstract

The main application of single-mode fibers is in signal transmission. The electrical signal to be transmitted is modulated onto an optical carrier wave which is guided by the fiber in the form of the LP01 mode. Different modulation techniques can be used: intensity, amplitude, phase, or frequency-modulation.
