Abstract
During the last few years many experiments have dealt with the manipulation of atomic velocities using laser sources. Mechanical action of light on the atoms has been extensively studied using different approaches: radiation pressure has been applied in atomic beam cooling; induced dipole force has been successfully used in collimating atomic beams and a new effect, Light-Induced Drift (LID), has been proposed and its effectiveness shown.
