Abstract
The finite velocity distribution of atoms imposes severe restrictions on the resolution obtainable in laser spectroscopy. These problems can be eased by applying non-linear spectroscopic techniques such as Raman processes or two-photon absorption, but only to a certain extent. The second order Doppler broadening and transit time broadening plays an ever increasing role in the continuing quest for higher optical resolution.
