Menschen, die an einem Defizit der Gleichgewichtskontrolle leiden, neigen eindeutig zu Stürzen. Ihr Defizit in Bezug auf die Gleichgewichtskontrolle kann das Ergebnis einer Vielzahl verschiedener sensorischer und zentraler Störungen sein. Diese Störungen können entweder einen einseitigen oder einen beidseitigen peripheren Vestibularisausfall beinhalten. Eine Störung des Gleichgewichts kann auch durch eine altersbedingte Abnahme der sensorischen oder motorischen Funktionsfähigkeit verursacht sein. Die Folgen sind jedoch ähnlich: ein Verlust des Gleichgewichts, ein schmerzhafter Sturz und womöglich hohe medizinische Folgekosten.
