Abstract
We review our recent work on the development of color-center lasers based on lithium-(F2 +)A centers in KI and RbI crystals. These laser materials have received considerable attention in recent years since they should provide broadly-tunable laser action at wavelengths longer than 3 μm [1,2]. We describe three significant advances that include: (1) the attainment of tunable laser action using electron-beam colored RbI, (2) the production of (F2 +)A centers in stable, additively-colored KI:Li crystals and (3) the application of a two-step photoionization technique to achieve high concentrations of (F2 +)A centers in both materials.
