Abstract

Optical spectroscopy plays a key role in determining the potential usefulness of materials for tunable solid state lasers. Along with obtaining information on the standard absorption and emission properties of the material, it is important to characterize the processes controlling the pumping dynamics of the material such as multiphoton absorption, radiationless relaxation, and energy transfer. We are currently involved in several different projects focused on the evaluation of new tunable solid state laser materials and on characterizing the fundamental properties of established laser materials. We describe here the results of some recent measurements of the optical spectroscopic properties of three different crystals doped with transition metal ions: RbCaF3:Rh2+, Li4Ge5O12:Ti4+, and BeAl2O4:Cr3+. The most impor-tant results include: (1) the observation of tunable optical gain in a material based on a 4d transition metal ion; (2) the observation of tunable optical gain in a charge transfer band in the blue-green spectral region; (3) the measurement of pump band to metastable state radiationless relaxation rate in Cr3+- doped materials; and (4) the characterization of long-range energy transfer among Cr3+ ions in alexandrite crystals at low temperatures.
