Abstract

Since the first sucessful demonstration of room-temperature tunable laser operation in alexandrite [1], researchers have discovered several new room-temperature tunable lasers including emerald [2], GSGG:Cr [3], GSAG:Cr [4], KZnF3:Cr [5], SrAlF5:Cr [6] and Al2O3:Ti [7]. The majority of the newly discovered tunable lasers have Cr3+ as an active ion. This is partly due to the relatively high room-temperature fluorescence quantum efficiency of Cr3+.
