Abstract

This introductory chapter, which is meant to be studied in parallel with the next three chapters, has a dual purpose. On the one hand, by treating in full detail a simple example, we show how to deal with problems in statistical physics: starting from a bare minimum of assumptions, we construct a model for the real physical situation and we solve it; we then compare the results that we have obtained with experiment in order to discuss the validity of the model; if we are not satisfied with the outcome of this discussion we reconsider the model and improve it until a satisfactory agreement with experiment is obtained.

Jean-Joseph Mounier, opening the debate of the National Assembly on the Declaration of Rights, the preamble to the Constitution, 9 July 1789

A. Gouges-Cartou, ibidem, August 1789
