Summary
This paper describes viscous flow phenomena occurring on external compression ramps of a hypersonic RAM inlet for the two stage to orbit configuration ELAC. Main design parameters for the inlet ramps and side walls are the pressure and the thermal loads. In this study these heat loads were measured by infrared thermography on an inlet model in the H2K hypersonic facility at Mach 6. Additional information about the viscous ramp flow were gained by oil flow diagnostics, Schlieren optics and Pitot pressure measurements. The influence of model parts like side walls or cowl were examined. Separation regions were visualised with respect to the boundary layer state. The measured data may be used for validation of numerical tools. As the main result of the study recommendations for the improvement of the inlet geometry are given.
