Definition und Lemma 11.1. Sei R ein faktorieller Ring. Ein Polynom \( f = \sum\nolimits_{i = 0}^n {a_i } X^i \in R[X] \) heißt primitiv, wenn ggT(a0, ..., an) = 1 gilt. Ist allgemeiner ggT(a0, ..., an) = d ∈ R, so heißt d der Inhalt von f. Dabei gilt:

Sind f, g ∈ R[X] primitiv, so ist auch fg primitiv.

Ist a ∈ R Primelement von R, so ist a auch als Element von R[X] (d.h. als konstantes Polynom a × X0) ein Primelement.
