Abstract
In this chapter we introduce the hamiltonian governing the interaction of quantized electromagnetic (em.) field with free atoms. We show how the facts of the physics of the problem can be used to reduce that hamiltonian to mathematically manageable forms. Simple prescriptions for constructing models conforming to frequently encountered conditions are given.
