Part of the book series: Springer Tracts in Modern Physics ((STMP,volume 194))

Abstract

In this chapter we will review the properties of photonic crystals based on silicon. We will deal both with fabrication techniques and with the photonic crystal properties. The first part is a short introduction to the new physics involved in photonic crystals. Then we will discuss various kinds of photonic crystals by separating them by their dimensionality: 1D, 2D and 3D photonic crystals.
