Summary
We describe various applications of the finite element package, Fastflo, developed by CSIRO. Fastflo has been successfully used for diverse industrial applications including magnetohydrodynamics, geological fluid dynamics, and flows in porous media with complex thermal effects, chemistry and strain. The capabilities of Fastflo will be highlighted, especially those that relate to the operator-splitting method in fluid dynamics. We summarise the application of Fastflo to turbulent flow, non-Newtonian flow and combustion. In the area of multi-physics, we describe work on chromatography and geophysics. Finally we describe an algorithm for fluid-structure interaction problems, based in this instance on laminar flow around the structure and time-dependent linear elasticity within the structure. The moving mesh capability of Fastflo is an important feature of this algorithm.
