Abstract

The regime of low-energy electronic stopping has been defined by
$$ v\lesssim v_0 \quad \textrm{or} \quad E/A_1\lesssim 25\; \textrm{keV} $$
in Fig. 4.2 The fact that the projectile speed is not large compared to even the lowest orbital speeds of the target electrons implies that ‘sudden’ Coulomb excitation underlying Bohr or Bethe theory ceases to be an effective energy-loss channel.
