Abstract
This chapter presents the basic terms of the formal language and finite state automata theory that are associated with syntactic pattern recognition methods. The symbols and terms introduced here will be used throughout this book; the formalisms introduced here will be used by the Authors in cognitive analyses of images presented in this book.

A word is regarded as `meaningful’ if it is employed during the use of the ana-lysed language. In some cases vocabulary ∑+ is identical with a set of all words above alphabet ∑. In such cases a simple combinatorial procedure is sufficient and any finite combination of symbols, with no exceptions, belonging to alphabet ∑ belongs to vocabulary ∑+. In languages applied in practice there is always a certain redundancy, i. e. only some symbol strings carry meaning while most other symbol strings (that can be built) from alphabet ∑ have no meaning.
