Abstract

The call for papers for the 1985 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation in St. Louis painted a very bright future for mobile robots and encouraged submission of papers on research into mobile robotics. At a conference in December 2001, a senior mobile robotics researcher expressed the view to this author that all the mobile robot research had been done. Yet, at the Intelligent Robots and Systems Conference in Lausanne in October 2002 [10], the robots entered in the ‘First International Cleaning Robot Contest’ performed poorly (Fig.6.1).
