Abstract
In this paper we present an integration of PVM with a user-level network called CLAN (Collapsed LAN). CLAN is a high-performance network targeted at the server room. It presents a non-coherent shared memory approach to data transfer, coupled with a unique synchronisation mechanism called Tripwire. The essential details of the CLAN interface are outlined, along with a version of PVM modified to take advantage of the underlying hardware. The paper also provides a quantitative comparison between CLAN and ordinary Gigabit Ethernet, concluding that the CLAN interface allows PVM to achieve a significant performance increase in inter-host communication latency.
