Obwohl die Bemühungen um eine optimale Rekonvaleszenz der Patienten wie in den vorangegangenen Kapiteln ausführlich erläutert bereits präoperativ, am besten sogar bereits vor der stationären Aufnahme beginnen müssen, kommt der postoperativen Phase natürlich eine entscheidende Bedeutung zu. Nach der Operation muss die präoperativ vereinbarte Zusammenarbeit von Patient, Pflegepersonal, Physiotherapie und Ärzten konsequent umgesetzt werden. Während die gesteckten Ziele bei kleinen Eingriffen in der Regel sehr leicht erreicht werden, sind bei mittelgroßen bis großen Operationen der Tag der Operation und der erste postoperative Tag von entscheidender Bedeutung für die weitere Rekonvaleszenz der Patienten. Fehler und Versäumnisse, die innerhalb der ersten 36–48 postoperativen Stunden auftreten, verzögern die weitere Genesung der Patienten in erheblichem Maß. Daher sind die Anforderungen an Patienten und medizinisches Personal innerhalb der ersten postoperativen Stunden besonders hoch. Der Operateur muss dabei als Arzt einschätzen, welches Ausmaß der Belastung dem Patienten zugemutet werden kann.
