Abstract
The small, continuous displacements around the actual vertical upright that characterize upright stance behavior reflect a complex control process that involves estimation of body position heavily dependent upon the integration of information from multiple sensory systems (for reviews, see Dietz, 1992; Horak & Macpherson, 1996; Nashner, 1981). Precise estimation of self-orientation is particularly important when confronted with new environmental conditions which require an immediate updating of the relative importance of different sources of sensory information (i.e., sensory reweighting). For example, environmental changes such as moving from a light to a dark environment or from a fixed to a moving support surface (e.g., onto a moving walkway at the airport) require an updating of sensory weights to current conditions so that muscular commands are based on the most precise and reliable sensory information available (Teasdale et al., 1991; Wolfson et al., 1985; Woollacott et al., 1986). On a longer time scale, sensory reweighting is also crucial when an individual sensory input is lost due to injury, disease or aging (e.g., proprioceptive loss due to diabetic peripheral neuropathy, vestibular dysfunction from Meniere’s disease, etc.).
