Summary
Basic phenomena of jet-airflow interaction are studied at several test cases. Simplified cases consisting of a flat plate at zero inclination and a vertically blowing thruster as well as two prospective thrusters on the X-38 re-entry vehicle are investigated. The corresponding flow topology is discussed and a general dependency on the ratio of onset flow and thruster jet strength is found. Within this study two particular vortex systems are observed. The first is a horseshoe vortex with a spanwise extension upstream of the thruster and two downstream legs. The second system is a closed ring vortex located around the perimeter of the thruster exit. In some cases this ring vortex breaks up into two counter rotating horseshoe vortices with spanwise filaments up- and downstream of the jet.
