Summary
For future vehicle navigation and vehicle location systems active as well as passive laser gyros are taken into account as heading sensors. After a short presentation of system considerations on frequently updated vehicle location systems, investigations on a fiber gyro setup are reported. They were aimed at clarifying the physical and engineering problems coming up with the work to be accomplished. In comparison to the requirements derived from the POLA-vehicle location system the results obtained show that the application of fiber optic sensors will be possible in the near future.
