Abstract
Many kinds of coherent sensors have been devised which use optical fibres. The choice of light source is dictated by many requirements including: high brightness (hence high launched power), ruggedness, insensitivity to reflections, reliability, low AM and FM noise, cost and power consumption. Most early experimental sensors used HeNe lasers, one benefit being direct visibility to the eye. Such lasers are also highly coherent and this was thought by many to be an essential requirement. However, high coherence is only required if the sensing interferometer has a large path difference, ie. if (T2–T1) >> 2π/ω) in Fig. 1.
