The anterior surface of the cornea is not the only source of astigmatism in the eye. The posterior surface of the cornea can also produce astigmatism, but the power of this surface is low and we only have scant knowledge of its astigmatism. On three subjects studied by Tscherning, this surface possessed inverse astigmatism that was as much as 0.5 D. The crystalline lens often causes important astigmatism.
