Abstract

The general requirements for light sources set out in Chap. 1 are appropriate for classical interferometry. The specific nature of holography, as indicated previously, requires that special attention be given to definite characteristics of the radiation of the source. The radiation must have

  1. 1)

    adequate temporal coherence so that a stationary interference micro-structure formed as a result of the coherent interaction of the object and the reference waves will exist in the plane of a hologram during the entire exposure;

  2. 2)

    sufficient spatial coherence so that the object wave scattered to a given point of the hologram from different parts of the surface being studied will create a clear interference microstructure exactly with the given element of the wavefront of the reference wave (this requirement is needed when light-scattering elements are used in a holographic setup);

  3. 3)

    sufficient power and the required wavelength so that the light-sensitive material used for recording a hologram will be able to respond to the action of the interference field during the exposure time.
