Abstract

For the last few years, one of the most interesting frontiers of nonlinear optics has been the vacuum ultraviolet spectral region. In this paper, we shall describe several nonlinear optics experiments concerning the generation of coherent VUV radiation or the excitation of VUV energy levels. These include the production of cw VUV radiation by four-wave mixing, hydrogen plasma diagnostics using resonant multiphoton ionization, and excitation of hydrogen Rydberg levels by three photon absorption.

The experimental work was performed when G.C. Bjorklund was at Bell Laboratories.
