Abstract
The interaction of a polyatomic molecule with intense laser radiation represents a very interesting but difficult problem. The study has obvious applications to isotope separation, to the production of highly excited vibrational and rotational states of the system, and the possible production of frequency selective chemical reactions. There have been many experimental observations of such phenomena. However, in general, the theory has not kept up well. It would be very useful to have an adequate theory with good predictive features.
