Abstract

The behaviour of atoms in high lying excited states submitted to a static electric field during the excitation or immediately after has been studied by different groups during the last years. Interesting, and sometimes rather unexpected phenomena have been observed and the situation is now becoming rather clear thanks to numerous and refined experiments and to successful interpretations.
