Abstract

Laser spectroscopy is one of the most lively fields in physics at the moment. Therefore a review of the present status in an introductory paper like this must be incomplete and can only be restricted to a few examples. The discussion of future perspectives is only possible on the basis of an extrapolation of long term developments and can therefore, of course, not contain the many surprising and unforseen findings which make the field interesting and lively.
