Abstract

Likewise the case of chemistry, lasers can be used in biology in either one of the following two ways: (i) To probe a biomolecule, in which case techniques such as Raman scattering, fluorescence, flash-photolysis etc. can all be used to get structural information about the given biomolecule; (ii) To act on a biomolecule so as to induce an irreversible change in its structure i.e. to perform photobiology. In this case, the possibility of performing selective photobiology, using schemes which are either similar or different to those already used to perform selective photochemistry appears to be a very challenging one.
