Abstract
The most important elements in any high-power laser system are the amplifiers that are used to boost the initial oscillator power to the desired output level. Optimization of the performance of such amplifiers leads to maximum system performance at minimum cost. In this chapter we investigate the general characteristics and present operating conditions for disk, active-mirror and rod amplifiers. It will be shown how it is possible to design an optimum amplifier by varying such parameters as disk doping, flashlamp bank energy, and pulsewidth. Also to be considered here are the present limits to achievable energy storage in amplifiers due to ASE or PO. We will also discuss the thermal-cycling time and storage efficiency of all three types of amplifiers. Short-pulse damage and nonlinear effects will not be discussed in this chapter but will be covered in detail in Chaps.6–7.
