Part of the book series: Lecture Notes in Physics ((LNP,volume 51))

Abstract

In the previous chapters we have considered the effects which result from the interaction between the colliding nuclei. Nothing has been said so far about the behaviour of the electrons in the inner shells during the HI collision. We shall discuss here two of the most interesting and still unsettled problems: (i) The emission of molecular X-rays from quasiatoms which are formed during the collision. The basic experimental and theoretical work on the behaviour of inner-shell electrons in an ion-atom collision is reviewed in [GA 73, KE 73, CR 75]. (ii) The spontaneous production of positrons in over-critical fields of superheavy quasi-atoms.
