Abstract

While chapter 2 is devoted to the discussion of classical concepts in HI scattering, we now turn to a description of other features of the interaction between a pair of heavy ions. Just as in the previous chapter, we aim at an introduction of certain theoretical concepts and the description of certain gross features of the cross sections deduced from them, rather than at a detailed description of specific modes of the reaction which forms the topic of later chapters. Some of these ideas can be traced back to the work of Kaufmann and Wolfgang [KA 61]. We found it convenient to divide this chapter into two parts which are but loosely connected. In the first part, we introduce the notions of channels, Q-values, grazing collisions, critical angular momentum, the fission channel etc. The second part deals with compound-nucleus formation in HI collisions, a topic which is taken up again in chapter 8. Here, we are only interested in limitations on compound-nucleus formation which are due to prompt fission, the existence of the Yrast line, and entrance channel effects.
