Abstract
Phototherapy with visible light is a world-wide accepted method for the treatment of neonatal unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia. Even if the phototreatment may be accompanied by the onset of side effects (see Table 1), the inherent advantages overcome the possible risks. The mortality rate, associated with exchange transfucion, i.e. with the major alternative treatment for hyperbilirubinemia, is about 1 percent in the leading neonatal units.
